Balmore Water Treatment Works is one of the largest state-of-the-art water treatment facilities in the UK, delivering 365 million litres of water per day to the central belt of Scotland, with built in expansion capacity for up to 455 million litres.
The semi-rural location demanded a design solution that blended large scale industrial type buildings into a rolling landscape.
The water treatment process was split into 5 distinct parts, which allowed the plant to be de-scaled and broken down into individual pavilions set within the existing landscape. Key elements of the process equipment have been used as features and celebrated behind large areas of curtain walling which are illuminated at night.
The normal tin-shed feel of previous treatment plants was avoided and quality materials utilised throughout to create an overall impression of modernity which was demanded by the client.
