RetailAn historic transformation
Our radical reworking of the existing St Enoch Centre to create a new leading shopping destination was a redefining moment in the history of Glasgow City Centre’s retail offering. The reforming of a whole new urban edge to the historic St Enoch Square and the creation of an iconic new centre entrance to Buchanan Street made this project truly transformational.
The Brief
The project comprised the overall redevelopment of the St Enoch Centre in Glasgow and the creation of an additional 250,000 sqft of new best in class retail and leisure space (taking the total to around 1.4 million sqft). The proposed transformation of the existing centre and the surrounding square together with the requirement for the existing centre to stay open made this a hugely complex challenge requiring a clear architectural vision.
The Design
Inspired by our bold vision and design process, the redesign of the St Enoch Centre has been a historic success.
An iconic new entrance now addresses Buchanan Street on the site of the former Clydesdale Bank building giving the repositioned centre a unique presence in the city. This also created a whole new urban edge to the square that provides a plaza-like atmosphere, and has radically repositioned the existing centre to a standard of excellence that has attracted new brands like Hamleys, H&M, Nandos and Henleys.
